Despite the fabulous trips to Europe, fun cruises in the Caribbean, all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and even magical islands in Hawaii, summer in Rhode Island is still one of my favorite places. In the wake of COVID -19, sometimes the best places are still in our own back yard.
As a native of the “ocean state,” there’s just something about the cool crisp air in
the New England summer, the vibrant blooming blue hydrangeas everywhere, the mom-and-pop restaurants, lines to get homemade ice cream in the cool 60-degree weather evenings and eating all the buttered “lobsta” rolls you can stand!
Newport bustles with tourists shopping near the docks, hosting magnificent sail boat regadas and seafood to die for. There’s always music and kite festivals, and you can visit the NE Tennis Hall of Fame.
Take the ferry to Block Island, RI out of Narragansett and watch the seagulls play, ride bikes around the island, climb down the Mohegan bluffs to collect beautiful colored rocks and watch the waves crash on the craggy rocky beach. Just enjoy the glorious weather and fragrance of wildflowers on a beautiful breezy summer day.
Visit Beaver Tail State Park in Jamestown. Bring a chair and a good book and read to the crashing waves, while glancing up at the sun shining on the water and sailboats in the bay. The lighthouse there is a beautiful backdrop for weddings, climbing the ragged rocks and fishing. It is a photographer’s delight.
Bristol, RI hosts the oldest July 4th parade and defines patriotism and small- town America. Marching bands from all over the country, antique cars, Elk club floats, local athletes, old-time fire trucks are just a few of the wide and varied entertainment during the 2 ½ hour beloved parade. And don’t miss the festivals and fireworks during fourth of July week!
Del’s frozen lemonade is a must—do not leave the state without having one! You will see their signature green and yellow carts, stands and trucks at every corner, baseball field and beach side location throughout the state. I drink one every day –just because I can! And it wouldn’t be summer without a clam boil at some family or sporting event. Just ask any local what they put in their family rendition of the favorite theme of any summer party! Simple fun is sometimes the best fun!
